National History
In the spring of 1996, Founding Monarch Melissa Jo
Murchison-Blake was in search of sisterhood. She wanted to be part of a
family that openly embraced all women and crossed cultural boundaries.
As a bi-racial woman, she did not want to choose between historically
Caucasian or African-American sororities. Founding Monarch
Murchison-Blake felt that if she did choose one, she would be denying
half of her heritage.
In the summer of 2003, Alpha and
Beta alumnae began discussing the idea of beginning a new chapter in
the Triangle area. Following Convention that year, sisters Kerry
Vallant and Liz Gutierrez hosted a meeting for local GAP women to
begin the process of establishing this new Triangle GAP
chapter. Desiree Bolibaugh, Megan Cornish, and Tonya Walton attended
the meeting; they all agreed to set out and create a new chapter.
They soon recruited Linda Kress to join them in their endeavor.
These six women met regularly over the next several months to lay
the foundation for the chapter. On April 16, 2004 the Xi Theta
Chapter of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. was founded.
